Depending on the condition of the substrate, the tools, and the application. To determine the exact consumption rate, a site test and a substrate test should be conducted first.

Preparation & Application

Substrate Preparation

New or Previously Painted Plasterboard, Drywall, Plaster, Prefabricated Boards, Brick, or Repaired Substrates:

  • Ensure the substrate is well adhered, free from impurities, clean, dry, and dust-free.
  • Rake out any cracks and repair with suitable, compatible fillers.
  • Lightly sand shiny surfaces and apply primer as needed for best results:
    • On plaster (gypsum, perlite, etc.), clean the surface and lightly sand if required.
    • On plasterboard or surfaces repaired with fillers, spot prime and/or apply a mist coat of Naturcolor or BaseCoat beforehand.
    • On absorbent substrates, apply 1 coat of Ambient Primer.
    • On wood, metal or non-porous substrate, apply Four2Four multi-surface primer.

If the substrate presents any complications, it may be necessary to conduct site trials on the surfaces to test and confirm suitability.

Product Preparation

  • Mix and dilute with 0-5% water for limewash applications, or dilute with 50% water to achieve a patina or glaze effect.
  • Stir thoroughly before and during use, avoiding excessive shaking to reduce bubble formation.
  • For added pigmentation, incorporate liquid toner into the product dilution. To ensure complete pigment dispersion, add a portion of water to the pigment containers.

Application Method

Limewash Application

Apply two coats with a brush, mitten, glove, or sponge, using soft, rounded, or multi-directional strokes to achieve a unique finish. Varying the paint load enhances the natural lime effect, while highlighting water reflections and shadows for a distinctive look.

Brick Whitewash Patina

  • Dampen the brick surface with water if it appears overly dry before applying a single coat of lime-based paint. Allow the paint to nearly dry for 30-60 minutes; drying times may vary depending on temperature and humidity.
  • Once the paint is almost dry, gently wash the surface with a slightly wet sponge or another tool to achieve the desired textured finish. Perform touch-ups as necessary.
  • Because lime-based paint requires proper drying between each coat for optimal coverage, it's essential to follow this step.
  • Avoid applying the paint too thickly, as excessive thickness can prolong curing times and lead to micro-cracking, compromising the finish's durability.

Curing

Complete opacity and consistent coverage of lime paints are typically attained within the first 3-4 days. Initially, the paint may appear slightly patchy, but it is advisable to wait for proper curing before applying additional coats.

Drying

At 25°C and 60% relative humidity (RH), allow 2-4 hours between coats and approximately 24 hours for the paint to fully dry. Keep in mind that fluctuations in temperature and humidity levels can influence these drying times.

To ensure proper curing, protect painted surfaces from rain, condensation, and water exposure for 4-5 days, including areas such as kitchens, bathrooms, and showers.

Complete curing generally occurs within about 30 days, at which point the paint achieves durability up to Class 1 standards. During this curing period, avoid rubbing or cleaning the surface to prevent damage.

Ambient Conditions

The working temperature (ambient and substrate) must be between 7 °C and 35 °C. Do not apply under direct sunlight or on surfaces heated by the sun. Avoid application if the humidity is above 80%.

Tools

For both limewash and Brick Whitewash Patina application, use a roller, brush or masonry brush.

Clean tools with warm water.
