Now Stocking Coloured Earth Pigments

Now Stocking Coloured Earth Pigments

Posted by Sarah, Celtic Sustainables on 24th Oct 2017

Since prehistoric times, we humans have used natural and mineral pigments to decorate our walls, bodies and possessions. Whether as a means of expression or as a record of events, we have utilised the natural colours of nature to adorn the walls of caves and castles alike. Prehistoric cave paintings, rich lime washes, glorious frescos, beautiful oil paintings, refreshing watercolours and inspired egg tempera icons, all have one thing in common, pigments. Without pigments there would be no lasting colour.

Coloured Earth Non-toxic, earth and mineral based pigments are suitable for colouring or tinting the following: Limewash, Plasters, cements, grouts, handmade paper, artist paints and pastels, varnishes, waxes, stains and glazes, natural paints (e.g clay paints and chalk paints).

You can choose from the 62 colours available or mix a combination of these colours for your own custom colour.

The pigments contain different sizes of particles, which give the colours their vibrancy. Some pigments are UV resistant and all are lime resistant.

Coloured Earth Pigments can be great for something different, for all abilities and experiments with a variety of effects.  Pigments are great way of adding a custom colour to a variety of materials interior and exterior.

Earths and Ochres

The all natural option these pigments are straight from the ground.

Natural earth pigments and Ochres are semi-transparent in nature so they give a softer more earthy tints especially when mixed with opaque bases such as white paints and plasters.

Lime Stable Pigments

Some types of pigments can be affected by the alkalinity of lime causing their colour to fade very quickly. Below is a list of the Coloured Earth Pigments that are safe to use with lime based binders. India Blue, Monte Carlo Blue, Battle Yellow, Lemon Yellow, Ercolano Orange, Magenta Rose, Ultramarine Rose, Cinnabar Red, French Laquer Red, Monte Carlo Green, Ultramarine Violet

All of the colours in the Coloured Earth Naturals range can be used with lime.

Mineral Pigments

Coloured Earth Mineral Pigments are manufactured by fixing a small amount of Synthetic pigment to a natural base such as calcium carbonate. Our minerals are semi-transparent in nature and will create soft pastel colours when mixed with a binder. If you require stronger colours take a look at the colours in our oxide and primary ranges. All of the pigments in the Mineral range are lime stable.

Primaries

Coloured Earth primary pigments are a stunning range of colours that cannot be created by mixing other pigments together. They are a fantastic non-toxic alternative to some of the traditional colours known as cadmium colours. The vivid, pigments have good tinting strength and are perfect for making paints.

Pigments in the Primary range are not suitable for Lime or cement based binders. They are however great for interior clay and gypsum based plasters.

Oxides

Coloured Earth Oxides pigments are manufactured from natural elements. They have strong tinting powers as they are more opaque than other types of pigments. Oxide paints are suitable for use with lime based binders.
