Lime Green Ashlar Lime Mortar has been developed for building and pointing applications requiring tight joints.
Perfect for laying bricks and cut stone on a tight bed of mortar, Ashlar Lime Mortar is made with natural hydraulic lime, sand, and stone dust. It has excellent water retention, preventing it from drying out too quickly when positioning the masonry.
The dry-bagged mortar only requires the addition of water and, once mixed, is suitable for joints between 3mm and 6mm. This traditional mortar is suitable for both renovation work and new build construction.
Lime Green manufactures the Ashlar mortar in a range of colours, helping you to find the perfect option for your project.
Please note that the colours shown on screen may vary from actual finishes. Colour samples are available on request.
Coverage
- For Repointing: 20kg m² stonework; 7kg m² brickwork.
- 1 kg of dried product per brick, or 1.5 tonnes, will produce 1 metre cubed of mortar.
Surface Preparation
Clean and remove all dust and loose material from joints and masonry, and dampen dry or high suction surfaces.
Mixing
- Slowly add 25 kg of the Lime Green Ashlar Lime mortar into a drum mixer.
- Add no more than 4 to 5 litres of clean water.
- Introduce the water slowly as the product mixes, using just enough to achieve the correct workability.
- Mix for 3 to 10 min.
- Lime Green mortars can be reworked for up to 8 hours.
Application
- Pointing and building mortars should be finished the same day or the following day during cooler periods.
- Lime mortars require longer curing times than cement mortars, but the methods and principles of application are similar.
- When pointing or laying hard, impervious masonry, or during cool, damp weather, lime mortars may take a few weeks to become fully frost-resistant.
- Do not use at temperatures below 5 ºC or above 30 ºC.
Curing
Hydraulic lime mortars will not set as quickly as modern cement-based materials; hydraulic lime starts to set once water has been added, and further hardening occurs through a slow reaction with carbon dioxide.
Strength and long-term durability are achieved over months, not days. Success depends on proper mortar curing. To ensure successful curing, protect the mortar against the effects of drying winds, strong sunlight, rain and frost.
- In warm weather, gently mist with water after application, and cover with damp hessian sheets if required.
- In cold weather, cover the fresh lime mortar with protective sheeting to help avoid frost damage.
