The Silicate Masonry Paint from Earthborn is highly durable and breathable, an alternative to traditional lime-based or conventional masonry paints.
Earthborn Silicate Masonry paint can last up to 15 years.
When used in conjunction with the Silicate Primer, it can be applied to interior and exterior mineral surfaces, e.g., stone, masonry, lime plaster, lime render, concrete, pebble dash, plaster, and sound silicate-based paint surfaces. It is especially suitable for renovations of solid masonry properties.
Earthborn Silicate Masonry Paint can now be applied over conventional ‘plastic’ masonry paints with the use of Earthborn's new Bonding Primer.
Some clay surfaces may require special treatment.
The Silicate paint is applied as a three-coat system, with either Earthborn's Silicate Primer or Bonding Primer as the first coat. Please see the "Which Primer do I need?" section below to find the right primer for your project.
Case Study: We helped renovate this Listed Victorian Cemetery Lodge (opens in new tab)
Coverage: 5-7m² per litre per coat on a smooth surface. Though coverage is highly dependent on surface porosity and surface texture. For example, if you need to cover 100 m² on a smooth wall, you would require 30 Litres of silicate paint and 20 Litres of Silicate Primer, based on 6 m² per litre. (This is for use as a rough guide only, in reality, coverage can differ greatly)
Drying Time: Touch dry 1-2 hours. Allow 6-12 hours between coats.
IMPORTANT: Do not apply if temperatures below 8°C are anticipated within 24 hours of application or if the substrate temperature is below 8°C. Do not apply in direct sunlight.

Which Primer do I need?
For the Silicate Masonry Paint from Earthborn to work effectively, you must use a primer as the first coat of the three-coat system. The paint and primer products form a chemical bond with underlying materials to create a water- and weather-resistant barrier.
Silicate Primer
Use the Silicate Primer from Earthborn on bare, porous, unpainted masonry substrates such as lime plaster, stone, pebbledash & concrete. When used with Earthborn's Silicate Masonry Paint, it creates a highly breathable, permanent chemical bond. It creates a water- and weather-resistant barrier while remaining water vapour-permeable, enabling the building to breathe.
When using the Silicate Primer, the three coats are as follows:
- First coat: Earthborn Silicate Primer
- Second Coat: Silicate Masonry Paint diluted with 10-20% Earthborn Silicate Primer
- Final coat: Silicate Masonry Paint
Further Information: Why do I need to use Earthborn Silicate Primer? (opens in new tab) .
Earthborn Silicate Masonry Paint, when used with the Silicate Primer, is not suitable for application over conventional ‘plastic’ masonry paints. Earthborn have just formulated a Bonding Primer which can be used alongside the Silicate Primer to "spot prime" areas where you have been unable to remove the plastic paint (the patches will not be breathable).
Bonding Primer
Use the Bonding Primer from Earthborn over previously painted sound masonry substrates. When used with Silicate Masonry Paint, it will create a strong mechanical bond. Surfaces painted with Bonding Primer will not be breathable.
When using the Bonding Primer, the three coats are as follows:
- First coat: Earthborn Bonding Primer
- Second Coat: Silicate Masonry Paint
- Final coat: Silicate Masonry Paint
