Whale of a Wall - Eco School Playground Mural

Whale of a Wall - Eco School Playground Mural

Posted by Celtic Sustainables on 16th Jan 2020

How London primary school St Georges transformed their playground into a giant aquarium

There aren’t many primary schools who can claim to have their very own life size whale on the premises but St George’s Primary School in Battersea, can do just that. They’re proud to be the guardians of a magnificent 22 meter wide mural depicting a life size whale complete with beautiful blue ocean background.

The inspiration for their impressive artwork, which is located in the school’s playground wall, came from their earlier involvement in another local project.

The Edible Bus Stop project was tasked with transforming a walkway along the boundary of the new Covent Garden Market development and it’s bordering local community in London. The 1km long, 3m high wall was dark, unattractive and topped with razor wire originally, until the Edible Bus Stop project brought it to life. The result was a colourful backdrop decorated with community inspired white line drawings, public seating and planters filled with edible and ornamental bee friendly plants.

The children from St Georges Primary School had been lucky enough to join in with the Edible Bus Stop project, providing input for the elements depicted in its mural and helping to plant up its borders. Inspired by their involvement, they decided to launch their very own project to brighten up the wall in their playground. The design for the mural was voted for by all the children in the school and their life size female whale was brought to life.

The paint they selected for the mural was Graphenstones’ Biosphere – a natural and sustainable paint with unrivalled environmental credentials. Made from a combination of pure lime and graphene it’s virtually VOC free, absorbs carbon dioxide, is breathable and incredibly durable.

The female whale is exactly the same length as the wall (22m). The mural is so large it is calculated to absorb approximately 30Kg of CO2!*
