Spring External Paint Guide: Tips and Recommendations

Spring External Paint Guide: Tips and Recommendations

Posted by Sarah, Celtic Sustainables on 30th Mar 2026

It’s that wonderful time of year when we shake off our winter slumber and welcome the vibrant spring energy! As we start to see our homes and gardens in a whole new light, it's the perfect moment to dive into outdoor projects. If you’re like me and are thinking about painting your exterior render and considering Beeck silicate paint, I’ve put together a helpful guide to answer some common questions before you get started.

Spring is ideal for exterior render painting, especially when temperatures are above 8°C, and the chance of frost is low. Frost can severely damage the finish by freezing the moisture in the paint, causing cracks and surface grazes. You also want to protect your work from driving rain, which can cause further damage. Make sure temperatures stay above 8°C, and there is no risk of frost for at least 24 hours to avoid cracking or adhesive issues.

But before we go on, what essential traits should you consider when choosing external paint?

Selecting exterior paint doesn’t mean sacrificing style for durability; you can enjoy both an attractive finish and long-lasting protection against the weather.  Whether the task is big or small, once you complete it, you’ll want to avoid redoing it in a few years. Here are some points to keep in mind:

  1. Durability and resistance: The paint should endure rain, wind, and temperature changes. At Celtic Sustainables, we have many different brands with suitable paints for both coastal and rural properties.
  2. UV protection: Silicate paints such as Keim, Graphenstone, Earthborn and Beeck all contain colourfast pigments that prevent fading, ensuring the colour remains vibrant and attractive. The paints are specifically formulated with mineral-based, inorganic pigments that offer high colour durability, resistance to fading, and long-lasting performance on exterior facades.

Eico Alterior Matt Paint, although not a mineral-based paint, still contains UV-stable pigments and is designed to be non-yellowing, ensuring they do not fade easily.

  1. Mould Resistance: The silicate paints have high alkalinity because of their lime content, which naturally helps prevent mould and algae growth.
  2. Preparation and quality: Use high-quality paints with better pigments and binders for better coverage and durability. Additionally, breathability is essential for masonry to avoid moisture buildup and prevent damage.

We’ve had a few enquiries into the Beeck Exterior Renosil Range lately, and it's good to clear things up a bit and open the discussion to everyone.

Beeck Renosil on Country cottage

Do you always have to use the coarse Beeck Renosil?

To prime or not to prime for Beeck Silicate Paints

The Beeck Renosil Exterior range offers both fine and coarse options. You don't always need to choose Beeck Renosil Coarse; the decision depends on your substrate's condition (the wall surface). Here's when to use it:

When to Use Renosil Coarse:

  • Surfaces in Poor Condition: If the wall has structural issues, hairline cracks, or a combination of old paint and bare plaster or stone, Renosil Coarse serves as a levelling primer to fill these imperfections.
  • Existing Coatings: When applying paint over old, but firmly adhering, synthetic resin paints or emulsions, the coarse coating helps smooth out the texture.
  • Masking Variations: It conceals differences in texture between repaired sections and the original wall.

When you can skip Renosil Coarse:

  • Good Condition Surfaces: If the wall is sound, in good condition, and defect-free, you can omit Renosil Coarse and use Beeck Renosil Fine for both the base and topcoat.
  • Preference for a Smooth Finish: If you want a perfectly smooth final look instead of a slightly textured surface, Renosil Fine is recommended.

Key Application Notes:

  • If using Renosil Coarse, it is intended as a base coat and must be finished with a topcoat of Renosil Fine.
  • If using Renosil Fine for the base coat, it should be diluted with 10–15% water or Fixative, while the topcoat is applied neat.
  • For best results, both coats (whether Coarse or Fine) should be tinted to the same colour.
