Let's take a closer look at Coloured Earth Pigments and transform your projects with their stunning hues.
Why we stock Natural and Synthetic Pigments from Coloured Earth Pigments
Since prehistoric times, humans have utilised natural mineral pigments to decorate walls, bodies, and
objects. These pigments have served as a form of expression and as records of historical events, harnessing the colours of the natural environment to embellish caves, castles, and other structures. From prehistoric cave paintings and rich lime washes to magnificent frescoes, oil paintings, watercolours, and egg tempera icons, pigments are an essential component. Without these pigments, lasting colour would not be possible.
Earth pigments continue to be popular among artists and builders. We've been thrilled with our customers' positive response to our pigment range, which they've been using creatively—such as colouring cement, creating traditional coloured lime plaster, producing art, and applying limewash in both local and nationwide construction projects. We love seeing your feedback, so if you have used the Coloured Earth Pigments, let us know! You can either email your projects to us or share them with us on social media by tagging us @Celticsustain.
Coloured Earth Pigments are ideal for unique projects, suitable for all skill levels and experimenting with different effects. They offer a versatile way to add a personalised colour to many materials, both indoors and outdoors.

Natural and Ochre Pigments from Coloured Earth Pigments
Coloured Earth offers a range of 19 earth and ochre pigments, sourced directly from natural ground materials. These natural pigments are semi-transparent, providing soft, earthy tones especially when mixed with opaque bases like white paints and plasters. Ideal for those seeking an eco-friendly and authentic colouring option. We’ve already received fantastic feedback from our customers; see for yourself why they are so popular: Karen said, “Loved all the colours, such rich tones,” and Helen said, “Introduced by a friend to these, and 100 gms would have been enough, so 500 gms goes a very long way, and quite brilliant for mixing with wood glue to hide imperfections. Quite amazingly fast delivery, so very grateful.”
The pigments contain particles of various sizes, which enhance their vibrancy. You might notice that some containers appear fuller than others; all our pigments are carefully weighed by Sara in the warehouse, typically in quantities of 100g or 500g. Just so you know, due to the lower density of Yellow Iron Oxides, you will receive approximately 400g instead of 500g. If you require larger quantities, please don’t hesitate to contact us. Additionally, some pigments are UV-resistant, and all are lime-resistant, ensuring durability and longevity.
Creating a limewash effect using natural ochre pigment from Coloured Earth Pigment
You can achieve a limewash look by blending ochre pigment with a binding agent such as Beeck Fixative, a clear, durable coating suitable for overpainting existing walls. Try it out—purchase a 1kg container of fixative and a small 100g of pigment to experiment.
Lime Wash Pigment options from Celtic Sustainables:
We offer a range of colours measured in 250ml, 1 litre, and 10 litres, making it easier to mix the dry pigment powder with water and lime to create limewash.
Oxides Pigments
Coloured Earth Oxides pigments are manufactured from natural elements. They have strong tinting powers as they are more opaque than other types of pigments. Oxide paints are suitable for use with lime based binders.
Some types of pigments can be affected by the alkalinity of lime, causing their colour to fade very quickly. All of the colours in the Coloured Earth Naturals range can be used with lime and cement.
Mineral Pigments Options from Celtic Sustainables
Coloured Earth Mineral Pigments are created by binding a small amount of synthetic pigment to a natural base like calcium carbonate. These minerals are semi-transparent and produce soft pastel shades when combined with a binder. For more vibrant colours, consider exploring our oxide and primary colour ranges. All pigments in the Mineral range are lime stable. Discover the 22 stunning synthetic pigment colours available—read our customer feedback and see why so many choose them!
Sarah said, “Beautiful colours, my homemade paints turned out great,” and Mrs Jl P said, “I love working with these pigments, such good quality.”
