Comfy, Sustainable Space for Teenagers with Cambridge Garden Rooms
Posted by Sarah, Celtic Sustainables on 16th Apr 2026
We recently caught up with Cameron Ford, the man behind Cambridge Garden Rooms, to hear about his latest projects. One stood out as a perfect example of building sustainably without compromising on comfort or style.
Based in and around Cambridge, Cameron and his team specialise in crafting beautiful, bespoke garden rooms with sustainability at their core. From electrics and plumbing to green roofs, plastering, patios, and even custom furniture, they offer a complete, start-to-finish service.

A Cambridge Garden Room Insulated with Sustainable Hemp Insulation
As Cameron puts it:
“Building with natural and renewable resources is kinder to our planet and our own health.”
Creating the Perfect Teen Hangout
In this recent project, the brief was simple: create a dedicated space where the clients’ teenage boys could relax, socialise, and game without taking over the house.
The challenge? Maximise the available space while keeping the build as sustainable as possible.
The result is a warm, comfortable, and highly functional garden room that works all year round. Cool in the summer and cosy through the winter.
Why Hemp Insulation Makes the Difference
A key part of achieving that comfort was the use of IndiTherm Flexible Hemp Insulation, supplied by Celtic Sustainables.
Hemp insulation offers a range of benefits that make it ideal for garden rooms and outdoor buildings:
- Excellent thermal performance for year-round comfort
- Breathable material that helps regulate moisture
- Natural, renewable, and low-impact
- Contributes to a healthier indoor environment
By using hemp insulation, Cameron created a high-performing thermal envelope that keeps the space comfortable no matter the season.
Airtightness with Breathability
To complement the insulation, the build also incorporated Pro Clima Intello Plus, a high-performance, vapour-open airtight membrane that Cameron and his team rely on time and time again.
This intelligent membrane helps manage moisture within the structure, improving durability and performance while maintaining a breathable building fabric—essential when working with natural materials.
The membrane was sealed with Tescon Vana and Tescon Profil membrane tapes.
Thoughtful, Sustainable Details
Taking the project one step further, Cameron even installed a waterless toilet by WooWoo Waterless. The WooWoo is a practical and eco-friendly addition that keeps the space functional for hours of uninterrupted use.
Built to Inspire
This project is a great example of how thoughtful design and sustainable materials can come together to create a space that’s not only practical, but genuinely enjoyable to use.
For anyone considering a garden room, home office, or outdoor retreat, it shows what’s possible when you choose natural insulation and high-performance breathable systems.
“We go to the team at Celtic Sustainables for our hemp insulation. Their communication is great, deliveries are on time, and the information is top notch.”
If you’re planning your own project, why not take inspiration from Cameron’s approach? Choosing materials like hemp insulation and breathable membranes can make a real difference—not just to performance, but to the health of your space and the planet.
