Water Saving Week in 2026 May - Celebrate Rainwater Reuse Week

Water Saving Week in 2026 May - Celebrate Rainwater Reuse Week

Posted by Sarah, Celtic Sustainables on 30th Apr 2026

Water Saving Week 2026 takes place from May 4th to May 8th, organised by Waterwise. Throughout the week, each day is dedicated to a different theme aimed at encouraging everyone to save water and help protect the environment, wildlife, and water resources.

This week, besides the upcoming Bank Holiday, we've been discussing Water Saving Week in the office. Organised by Waterwise, it runs until May 8th. The campaign highlights the importance of reducing water waste to protect the environment, wildlife, and water resources. It's quite significant, yet not many people are aware of it. If everyone does their part, we can make a big difference this week. Making these habits can lead to a substantial impact by the year's end.

20 pledges by waterwise campaign

“Protect Water for Wildlife is this year’s Water Saving Week campaign theme. This isn’t just about saving water. It’s about understanding the direct connection between the water we use every day and the health of the natural world around us. Whether at home, at work, or in hospitality settings, your actions help protect rivers, lakes, and the wildlife that depends on them.” – Waterwise

Waterwise campaign has daily themes running next week;

  • Monday 4th May: Water is wild, act like it: discover how your everyday water use connects directly to rivers, lakes, and wildlife and why small actions matter!
  • Tuesday 5th May: Small changes. Wild impact: Meet the wildlife your water-saving actions help protect and support ecosystems.
  • Wednesday 6th May: Stop leaks, save habitats: Learn how hidden leaks waste huge amounts of water, and how fixing them protects rivers, ponds and wetlands.
  • Thursday 7th May: Cool water, save wildlife: Use less hot water = Reduction of pressure on freshwater environments.
  • Friday 8th May: A wilder future: Look and plan ahead for a water-wise nature-rich future.

As part of their campaign, Waterwise has introduced 20 simple water-saving pledges, designed to help people reduce water usage in easy, practical ways. There are plenty of useful ideas to get involved with, such as Pledge 6: “Cold Drinks All Day”—keeping a chilled jug of water in the fridge to avoid running the tap—and Pledge 14: “Bowl Over Waste”, which encourages washing fruit and vegetables in a bowl and then reusing that water for plants. Small changes like these can make a big difference.

One pledge we particularly support is Pledge 17: “Tap into FREE Water!”—collecting rainwater in a water butt to keep your garden thriving, especially during warmer weather.

If you already have a water butt installed, you’re off to a great start. To make it even more effective, you might consider adding a rainwater diverter with a universal fitting kit. These clever additions help filter out debris before it enters the butt, keeping your stored water cleaner and more usable.

Water Butts and Rain Barrels

Installing a water butt is one of the most common and effective ways to collect rainwater from your downpipes. We offer helpful guides on installation and usage, making it easy to get started. Many plants actually prefer rainwater over treated tap water, making this a simple win for both your garden and water conservation efforts.

With this year’s theme, “Protect Water for Wildlife,” it’s the perfect time to highlight our water butts with integrated planters.

These offer multiple benefits:Rainwater harvesting with herb garden planter

  1. Great for pollinators – We’ve grown strawberries and mint in ours, attracting bumblebees and even the occasional blackbird!
  2. Visually appealing – They add colour and interest to any outdoor space, brightening up your garden.
  3. Practical water saving – You still collect and store a substantial amount of rainwater, helping your plants flourish naturally.

It’s a simple upgrade that delivers real impact—both visually and environmentally.

Top tip: Ditch the hose and switch to a watering can—it’s a simple way to use less water more efficiently.
