Product uses
- Repairing brick and stone
- Can be carved
- Colour matching
- Not for steps
Consumption
Approximately 1.6kg of dry mortar is required per litre. A 25 kg bag yields around 15 litres of
mortar.
Surface Preparation
The background must be thoroughly assessed before starting work to identify the cause of decay and ensure the compatibility of the repair mix, including factors such as porosity, strength, and capillary uptake. Remove any loose or friable masonry and contamination. Heavy salt contamination in stone or bricks may render them unsuitable for repairs. For highly porous or dusty surfaces, priming and stabilizing with Silic8 PS1 primer the day before, after compatibility testing, is recommended. Confirm that the substrate can support the weight of the new material, such as 10mm of Contour over 1m2, which weighs approximately 20kg. In some cases, installing brass armatures or stainless-steel lath may be necessary to support the repair mix, especially on thicker build-ups.
Mixing
Mix in a drum mixer or by paddle mixer, avoid creating excessive dust. Carefully add the powder to
clean water, using approximately 5 litres per 25kg bag. Mix for between 2 and 5 minutes until a
workable consistency is achieved. Do not re-work. Do not use in temperatures less than 3ºC or over
25ºC.
Application
Lightly dampen the background before applying with a hawk and trowel or small tools. Use contour for patching or creating “blocks” of stone or brick effect. Never apply in a continuous coat as with a render. Coats should be at least 6mm and no more than 30mm thick. For multiple coats, key each layer and apply green on green. For carved or cut-back finishes, apply the mix slightly beyond the finished level. As the mortar hardens, it can be worked with different techniques and tools to achieve the desired shape and finish. Conduct trials before starting work.
Casting
Pour and compact into small moulds prepared with mould release oil, use vibration to remove
air bubbles and allow to set. Contour is not suitable for large cast pieces.
For larger cast pieces consider the Roman Stucco Cast
Curing
Prevent the repair mortar from drying out too rapidly, covering with hessian or mortar fleece if necessary. Protect from frost for at least 7 days.
