Celebrating Water Reuse Week! 15-21 September 2025

Celebrating Water Reuse Week! 15-21 September 2025

Posted by Sarah, Celtic Sustainables on 10th Sep 2025

From 15–21 September 2025, communities, workplaces, families, and individuals across the UK will unite for Water Reuse Week. It’s a nationwide call to rethink how we use and reuse one of our most precious resources.

Longer, hotter summers are already placing unprecedented pressure on our water systems. UK water companies estimate that we’ll need an extra 5 billion litres every single day within the next 25 years. That’s more than 16 million bathtubs of water. Without change, supply simply won’t keep pace with demand.

The good news? We already have part of the solution. Water reuse can make a measurable difference today. From flushing toilets to watering gardens or washing vehicles, rainwater can replace mains water and therefore relieve pressure on overstretched supplies while cutting household costs and carbon footprints.

Water Reuse Week 2025

Yet, as a society, we’ve barely scratched the surface of what’s possible. By joining Water Reuse Week, you’ll be part of a growing movement that recognises water reuse not as a niche practice, but as a cornerstone of a resilient, sustainable future.

This September, take action. Explore new ways to capture and reuse rainwater, share ideas with your community, and help shift the conversation from water scarcity to water smart #WaterReuseWeekUK.

Together, we can close the gap between what we know and what we do, and ensure water security for generations to come.

Saving water can be simple, and the small changes really add up. Here are some quick wins:

Tips for Saving Water in the Garden:

  1. Embrace a Drought-Tolerant Lawn: Allowing your lawn to take on a golden hue during dry spells can be beneficial. While it may look unappealing at first, many lawns can quickly recover with a little rainfall.
  2. Use a Watering Can: Instead of relying on hoses or sprinklers, opt for a watering can. This method allows for more controlled and efficient watering.
  3. Optimal Watering Times: To minimise evaporation, it's best to water your plants early in the morning or late in the evening. These cooler times of the day help ensure that more water reaches the roots.
  4. Install a Water Butt: One of the most effective ways to conserve water is by installing a water butt. Connect it to your garden shed, greenhouse, or a downpipe from your house to collect rainwater. This initiative can significantly reduce your reliance on tap water in the garden.

Effective Tips for Conserving Water at Home and Work:

  1. Run Dishwashers Only When Full: Ensure that your dishwasher is fully loaded before running it to maximise efficiency and minimise water wastage.
  2. Turn Off Taps During Personal Care: While brushing your teeth or shaving, turn off the tap to prevent unnecessary water flow.
  3. Limit Showers to 4 Minutes: Aim for shorter showers—around 4 minutes is recommended—as it significantly reduces water usage.
  4. Check for Leaky Toilets: Regularly inspect your toilets for leaks. A leaky toilet can waste a substantial amount of water, so addressing any issues promptly can lead to significant savings.

Implementing these practices can lead to considerable water conservation both at home and in the workplace.

Join the campaign: Visit the UK Water Reuse Association website to find out how you, your school or business can get involved. And remember to use #WaterReuseWeekUK if you’ve install a water butt this year!
