Eco Technology Week Cardigan

Eco Technology Week is a chance for local businesses, community projects, traders or members of the community to come together and raise awareness on Eco Technologies that are available to us in Cardigan and the surrounding area.

Call in to the Guild Hall in Cardigan for information on renewable energy, eco-friendly building, conversions and decorating, sustainable transport, feed-in tariffs, and the renewable heat incentive. We will have a variety of informative stalls for you from professionals on sustainable technologies.

There will be lots of free talks and workshops from the experts, including a host of talks from Eco Centre Wales and workshops on Working with Wood from Osmo Oils. The activities will be going on all week, keep your eye out for a list of stallholders and speakers which we'll post here soon.

Child friendly eco paints.

There is an increasing awareness and understanding of using child safe paints on children's toys and furniture. More and more carpenters and wood workers are using child friendly paints.

Local carpenter Go with the Grain got in touch with us about their latest Wendy house project painted in Earthborn Eggshell, which are certified as child-safe paints. They chose a soft pink colour called Tutu. Not only does the finish on the Wendy House look amazing it is both Child friendly and Eco friendly.

Paints can be child safe by being VOC free, meaning they don’t give off harmful gases or smells, and by containing no toxic ingredients. We at Celtic Sustainables choose the safest products we can find, and are happy to advise on the best paint or finish to use for your needs.

New Earthborn Pigments for mixing with paint

Earthborn pigments are natural earth and mineral powders that can be combined to make additional colours. You can choose from the 48 available colours or mix a combination of these colours for your own custom colour.

Earthborn pigments are also ideal for paint effects. The Mica pigments such as Gold and Silver can be mixed with Earthborn Wall Glaze for metallic effects.

The pigments contain different sizes of particles, which give the colours their vibrancy. Some pigments are UV resistant and all are lime resistant.

Meadow Green, Turquoise, Blue and Oriental Red are Spinel pigments which are pigments enhanced with food colourants.

Earthborn Pigments can be great for something different, with abilities to experiments with a variety of effects. Pigments are great way of adding a custom colour to a variety of materials interior and exterior!

Earthborn and Osmo Used More and More

These days more and more organizations realise that using environmentally friendly decorating products is beneficial not only to their image, but most importantly to the well being of their staff and customers who use their buildings every day.

In just the last couple of weeks both the Federation of City Farms and Community Gardens and Howies organic clothing company have chosen Celtic Sustainables as their eco paint supplier.

The Federation of City Farms and Community Gardens used Earthborn Claypaints in their Cardiff offices. Howies decorated their new Cardigan shop with Earthborn and Biofa paint, with plans for a ‘Howies blue’ feature wall in Earthborn Claypaint. They’re also using Osmo Polyx wood oil on the wooden flooring for a hard-wearing protective finish.

We were pleased with the finishes on the wood. We applied 2 coats to each piece of wood. There is very little odour and the oil is very easy to spread. We found that the consistency of the Polyx Oil was thicker due to its wax ingredients. This oil was still very easy to apply and it was low in fumes.

We found that the wood was very attractive with one coat of colour or tinted oil . One option would be for interior tints to apply 1 coat and then one coat of clear polyx oil and for exterior 1 coat colour and 1 coat clear UV protection. This would give you a more natural grain appearance.

Celtic Sustainables are now supplying solid fuels from Green Dragon.

Green Dragon Nuggets

We've recently started supplying bags of nuggets and boxes of briquettes which work just like coal and wood on your fire, but are much nicer to handle and are compostable after use!

Green Dragon are part of a co-operative of farmers, producing fuels from the waste husks of their rapeseed plants.

Celtic Sustainables have embraced a brand new insulation from Blackmountain.

It's great properties (as seen on the datasheet, and our webpage:

Blackmountain Hemp Insulation) make it ideal for timber frame buildings and heritage properties alike.

The insulation comes in rigid batts made from UK grown hemp and flax, manufactured in North Wales. Unlike other hemp insulation it's not brought in from abroad, and is therefore significantly cheaper than the competition.

Along with a display of the Celtic Sustainables range, the shop features locally made crafts, eco friendly products including handmade cards, gifts, plants, woodcrafts, and a huge variety of second hand goods.

The shop also provides information on all aspects of green living, sources on sustainable building, permaculture and forest gardening, including screenings of films on local ventures and sustainability.

We will be open for business from 10:00am to 4:00pm on the Good Friday and Easter Monday bank holidays, and on the Saturday morning between the two. We know many of you will want to get on with some decorating over Easter, so we look forward to seeing you then.

After a successful day at the St Dogmaels Christmas Fair and Market on Sunday, Celtic Sustainables will be exhibiting at the following events:

Our range of products can now be purchased online through the brand new Celtic Sustainables Webshop. Orders can be delivered directly to the customer, or chosen to be picked up from our factory outlet.

The online shop lists a variety of Natural Paints and Warmcel 100 insulation. It will be updated regularly with new products and details.

Celtic Sustainables also exhibited at the St Dogmaels Local Producer's Market; a great local market with a variety of food and craft stalls, located in St Dogmaels Abbey every Tuesday between 9am and 2pm.

Celtic Sustainables launch at Celtic Blue Rock.

Celtic Sustainables launched their company with a stall in the 'Green Futures' marquee, along with the West Wales Eco-Centre, Llamas Project, Cardigan Small World Theatre and Transition Towns, at the Celtic Blue Rock festival.

Despite the mud there was much interest in the stall, and Celtic Sustainables are looking forward to the rest of their upcoming exhibitions in August.
