Blackmountain Sheepwool Insulation
Wool is a natural insulator, for thousands of years has been used by humans for warmth.
Wool insulation had been available to buy in the UK for years, but only from abroad. In the last few years manufacturers of wool insulation have started in the UK. Black Mountain's Sheepwool comes from UK farms, and is manufactured in their factory in North Wales.
Performance
Wool has a good insulating performance with certain health and performance advantages over other materials. It has a thermal conductivity value of 0.04 W/mk. Wool can be used to insulate lofts and sloping ceilings, timber frame walls and suspended timber floors and is ideal for use in heritage properties.
When wool fibres are packed together, they form tiny air pockets which trap air, and in turn serves to keep warmth in during winter and out in the summer.
Wool is highly breathable. It absorbs and releases moisture from the surrounding air, without compromising it's thermal efficiency. When wool fibres absorbs moisture, they generate tiny amounts of heat. This warmth acts to prevent condensation in construction cavities by maintaining the temperature above the dew-point in damp conditions.
Fire and pest resistance
Wool is naturally resistant to fire. Wool insulation is treated with boron salts to meet current fire performance regulation: BS5803-4:1985, and to make it an unattractive place for rodents or insects.
Durability
Sheepwool is strong, durable, safe to handle and easy to install. Sheepwool fibres do not break like mineral wool, so it insulates well for longer.
Cost
As all wool is bought, and sold through the British Wool Marketing Board, and wool insulation is still produced on a fairly small scale, wool insulation is more expensive than conventional materials such as mineral wool. However, with so many advantages for health, the local economy and the wider environment, it is well worth considering. The energy used to manufacture sheep's wool insulation is only about 15% of that used to make conventional glass-fibre insulation.
